@robpinney: Perhaps I'm missing some contextual information here (i.e., the other code you're using to retrieve the posts themselves), but here's what happens for me in version 4.5.1 when I test out the code you have shared:

I have a parent category and three children, with these IDs:

- Parent: ID 3
-- Child: ID 4
-- Child: ID 5
-- Child: ID 6

and value I end up with for $latest_issue is 6.

Is that not what you're expecting to happen?

Or is that what you are expecting to happen, but it is not happening for you?
