This update will not install on my site. It keeps saying it can't install the update.
"The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions. tmp/configCache.php"

https://wordpress.org/plugins/wordfence/

Hello pilardavis,
are you using a different method of installing this update than you have done with previous updates? Did you upload the files with FTP or did you update via WordPress administration panel?

I just click install updates and do it with all of my other updates. I've never done it any other way.

it has always worked perfectly. I do web design and have WF installed on every site I manaage and all of theirs updated fine. I even added the option to have my WF on my own site update automatically but it still didnt update.

Alright, that's a bit odd. If you rename that file (just put an underscore at the start of it) and then visit your site it should be recreated. Does the update work if you do that?

rename what file? the tmp...?
also, what should be recreated?

Rename the file configCache.php which is located in wp-content/plugins/wordfence/tmp. If you do that, it will be recreated as soon as you visit your site.

when i go to the wordfence/tmp file this is what it shows...
/<?php/* Wordfence temporary file security header */
echo "Nothing to see here!n"; exit(0);
?>a:13:{s:6:"apiKey";s:160:"1eca4f8117ea2e747d3b421dbca1edad2cde31a9da43a0d20c4cdd82b428a79a644ec09494ce526b0893e12bcd1968ce9c6aecf933e082ac845f14b96e58d3a4492a6e653f1f8465c9a27cd0318204cc";s:9:"howGetIPs";s:0:"";s:11:"whitelisted";s:0:"";s:9:"cacheType";s:0:"";s:20:"loginSec_lockoutMins";s:3:"240";s:19:"other_hideWPVersion";s:1:"1";s:33:"scansEnabled_suspiciousAdminUsers";s:1:"1";s:18:"liveTrafficEnabled";s:1:"1";s:6:"isPaid";s:0:"";s:15:"firewallEnabled";s:1:"1";s:14:"disableCookies";s:1:"0";s:18:"liveTraf_ignoreIPs";s:0:"";s:17:"liveTraf_ignoreUA";s:0:"";}/

Hello,
yes, that file is called configCache.php, correct? Just rename it to _configCache.php or something like that and then try to run your update.

When i go to that location it says the file is "inactive". There doesn't appear to be a way to change the file name. Do you mind letting me know how to go about changing it. I hate messing with .php files because in my experience my site always fails afterward. but if you know a way i can give it a try.

the only way i know of is to change the first part to something like
/<?php
rename("_configCache.php");
?>/

but that seems like it wouldnt work.

Hello pilardavis,
you don't have to worry about ruining this file because if you accidentally delete it it will just recreate itself. So as long as you don't touch any other files but configCache.php you'll be ok!

Since it can't be removed by WordPress you likely won't be able to remove it with other PHP scripts either. The file permissions on that particular file are off. Are you able to access your site with FTP, SSH or via a file browser in your web hosts administration panel?

i figured i needed to go into the host ftp files. i had never known of a way to change the file names from within the editor folder in my dashboard. I'll try to do it via the host.
