Don't get an error message. Just no response. Tried to request a pswd reset using the email address, but that too did nothing.

The site was used for some non-wp testing so there are other files and folders in the directory. Deleted index.htm but didn't change the results.

Is the fact that there are other files/folders on the site causing the logon issue? The wp folders are installed in the root folder.

That shouldn't be an issue - with the possible exception of old index.html files which can cause problems. Try checking your site's error logs for messages. Your hosts should be able to help you accessing your site's error logs.

Go to wp-config.php and make debug true define( 'WP_DEBUG', true );
To display errors.
