I have a minimalist website-- just a sidebar and content. For SEO purposes, I'd like the sidebar widget title to "be" the site-title. Can I accomplish this in the functions file, and if so, can anyone give me guidance?

One option would be to place a text widget in your sidebar and put the site title in the widget wrapped in <h1> tags. You could then hide the title from the header by going to Dashboard > Appearance > Customize > Site Identity and unchecking "Display Site Title and Tagline".
