I've been getting this error "wordpress is currently unable to handle this request HTTP ERROR 500" every time I try to activate a plugin. I began deactivating plugins one at a time and trying to activate the new plugins and still get the 500 error. Then before going further I tried reactivating the plugins I tued off and I get the 500 error.

If all plugins are off and it happens, it could be one of two things, you've either got a theme interfering, or an incomplete WordPress installation.

The incomplete WP setup can some times happen after an update, and is quite easy to fix by going to Dashboard > Update and clicking the re-install button (don't worry, it will only fetch a fresh copy of the WordPress files, and your site will still function as normal)

Thanks Marius, I tried reinstalling WP and it didn't change anything. I want to go thru the plugins but I am afraid of tuing them off and not being able to tu them back on and still not having a solution.

Have you tried a different theme? (if you make a backup first even if you can't restore it via the admin you should be good)

We generally recommend testing with the Twenty Sixteen theme and no plugins enabled to see if the problem persists.

I havent I'll have to make time to try that... Is there any other suggestions? Its just odd that I get a 500 error when there is nothing wrong with the server. Why a 500 error?

A 500 error means there is something wrong with a piece of code being executed, this would in yoru case (most likely) be caused by a plugin or your theme, the only way to test this is through deactivation.

in your opinion, would you deactivate all the plugins one by one even though they wont reactivate...

I'd deactivate them all and re-activate them one at a time until the problem reoccurs

I would suggest the same as Marius did, if you can access your wordpress dashboard, then deactivate all and reactivate one by one, if you cannot access your dashboard page at all, then you must remove the recent plugin entry from the database table wp_options, option name 'active_plugins' and then your wordpress dashboard page will be accessible. Hope that helps.

Please don't manually edit the database, simply renaming the folder name for the plugin via FTP or similar will short-circuit it and disable that individual plugin without the risk of breaking the database fields :)

I won't Marius, thanks for your advice. As soon as I can make the time to deactivate all the plugs I will update the conversation.

Ok, I went through almost all the plugins and when I got thru all but 4 I took a chance and selected all the plugins and reactivated them then they activated. There was a bug in there somewhere just not sure which one. But nonetheless it was a plugin issue.

Awesome, when you do find out which one is causing it, could you let us know?

We like to keep tabs, in many cases we can help others who stumble on the same issue that way :)

ok I found that the problem is my theme. then how can I solve the problem I had work on the theme lot and designed how can I solve the problem on it instead upload a new copy of it.

I had the same problem with installing new plugins, every time i try to install a new plugin through wordpress dashboard, it keeps showing a 500 error.
What i did and what i suggest you to do is to try installing the plugins through cPanel. (My site is hosted by godaddy and i use cPanel directly from GoDaddy to install the plugins) This has fixed my problems, and hope to fix yours too.

Figured it out..

Open wp-config.php
Set define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '64M'); - or 128M if still has error
