sterndata on "how to get the index number of current post ?"

I would like to get the index number of current post like as :

(3 of 45 posts) in single.php

I have tried to get it

echo $wp_query->current_post;

But the result is "-1";
any post also get "-1";

any one can help ?

Are you using it in the loop?
