I have a self hosted site and would love to use Jetpacks ability to Post by Email. Can Jetpack work in a website that is not wordpress.com?

Jetpack was built for self-hosted sites, so it will indeed be able to use on your site, and use features like the Post By Email module. We build the plugin to bring features that were previously only available on WordPress.com, to self-hosted sites.

To get started, you can go to Plugins > Add New in your dashboard, and search for "Jetpack".

That's correct. Jetpack allows you to use the WordPress.com cloud on your site. For example, you can enable Jetpack's Stats module, and Jetpack will collect stats about your visitors on your site, and calculates stats on WordPress.com.

That's why you need a WordPress.com account, to link your self-hosted site to WordPress.com.

Don't worry though, that account is free, and you don't need to set up a site on WordPress.com. You should be able to create an account and get going in a few minutes, through this page:
