How does the bidding work regarding search results?

Hey guys, I would like to try Adwords and can use some help please. When I do keyword research and I see a CPC say 1.57 for a particular kw, does this mean that every time someone should click on my ad I will pay 1.57 or would it cost me 'more' than 1.57 each time my ad is clicked on?
